Message from the Vice Provost
Welcome to the UCLA Institute of American Cultures (IAC)!
The IAC is the administrative home of the four ethnic studies centers at UCLA – the American Indian Studies Center, the Asian American Studies Center, the Chicano Studies Research Center, and the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies. These University of California (UC) organized research units (ORU) were established in 1969 (under the Office of the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellor) and have been involved in advancing research for social justice ever since, grounded in the experiences and issues of our communities in the greater Los Angeles area, but also throughout the United States and internationally and transnationally as well.
The research of our centers spans and draws from the entire campus of UCLA. As an integral part of a world-class university with a public mission, the IAC and our centers examine the dynamic and complex social, economic, political, and cultural formations that are the United States. With our community-based partners, we produce new knowledge that helps shape policy and imagine and work toward a more just and equitable society and world.
Thank you for visiting, and we hope to see you at one of our many programs!
Sincerely,
David K. Yoo
Vice Provost & Professor
